Because it's been awhile since I've posted something, I figured I'd put together a Year In Review kinda thing for 2006 ...Films:
Inland Empire
Half Nelson
Casino Royale
There were also some fantastic films I finally got around to watching for the first time this year: Bloody Sunday, The Station Agent, Keane and Paris, Texas.
Books:
Fiction -
Amongst Women by John McGahern
Death of an Ordinary Man by Glen Duncan
Nonfiction -
The Little Chapel on the River by Gwendolyn Bounds
Music:
Wow. I found The Frames - For the Birds. Setlist. Just fantastic stuff. I was turned onto the band Elbow's latest album, Leaders of the Free World, by my friend who is my source for new and interesting music. This year we saw them in concert (a great show) and I listened to their first album, Asleep in the Back, a great deal during the year ...
Theater:
The Gate Theatre's production of Waiting For Godot. I've been hoping to see this production for about ten years. An amazing production. I saw it twice. Very simple, focused and specific, which is no easy task with Godot.
Moments in Sports:
- Papi setting the single season home run record for the Red Sox was the highpoint of a dismal season.
- Coco's catch was freakin' awesome.
- Papelbon taking the mound to earn his first save was a pretty exciting moment.
- Endy's catch was perhaps the greatest catch I've ever seen and would have meant much more had the Mets actually won.
The Show Stopper:
St. Patrick's Day in Ireland. What began late last year as a jokey idea somehow gained momentum and became a family expedition in mid-March. My wife, mother, father, sister, nephew and niece all ended up in Dublin and we then embarked on a three-car caravan driving across Ireland (an experience itself). On St. Patrick's Day we were in Co. Letrim, discovering the area my family came from a century ago. We may have found the family church and a castle relatives may have inhabited in the 16th century, but we were definitely in the neighborhood of our forebears. We then went on into Sligo, found that the pubs no longer served food after 6PM and my first pint of Guinness on St. Patrick's Day was had in an Italian restaurant where we had pizza for dinner. We ended up in the bar of the hotel my folks were staying in, all seven of us around a table, having pints and laughs, recounting the events of the day and the unforgettable experience of us all being in Ireland together.

There were other events, good and bad. These were the things that came immediately to mind. I had been thinking that the year kinda sucked but once I began listing these things I'm reminded that 2006 wasn't too bad after all.
